Galang, R. and D. A. Madulid. 2006.  A second new species of Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) from Panay Island, Philippines.  Folia Malaysiana 7: 1-8.

This species was discovered by Renee Galang during his expedition to Mt. Igtuog and Mt. Sakpaw in the Central Panay mountain range during the course of his study of the Philippine Spotted Deer (Cervus alfredi).

One of the most distinctive features of Rafflesia lobata is that some populations have flowers with a lobed diaphragm that opens outward.  Nearly all other Rafflesia (and Sapria) species have diaphragms that curve inward. That said, it is interesting to note that this feature is polymorphic in R. lobata (at least as the species is currently defined).

Igpasungaw Falls

 Igpasungaw Falls are considered as one of the major natural attraction in Sebaste.
Located in the Province of Antique. Whether from Caticlan or Kalibo, you can ride a bus leading to San Jose de Buenavista and drop in the town proper of Sebaste, the municipality where the Igpasungaw Falls is situated.

You will take a 15-minute tricycle or motorcycle ride from the highway up to the location where trekking will start. Hiking will take 40 minutes to 1 hour before reaching the waterfalls. Fifty (50) Philippine Peso is being paid as the Environmental Fee per head. Moreover, Tour-guide fee is about 200 Pesos.

The place is worth a visit for nature lovers and thrill seekers. Igpasungaw Falls has a unique features.

The Patuyaw Festival

The patuyaw, a fresh water shrimp which thrives abundantly in the streams, river, brooks and creeks in the Municipality  and is a good source of nutrition and living of the people, symbolizes the abundance of the nature which sustains life for the Sebastehanon and the precarious relationship between the people nad the environment.

Patuyaw specially weaves a strand on the culture and the way of life of the Sebastehanon who have been dependent on the bounty of the water.

The Parish of Saint Blaise

The parish of St. Blaise was founded on August 25, 1897 with Rev. Fr. Domingo Carrera from the order of St.  Augustine as its first parish priest. The parish got its name from the place where its patron saint St. blaise came from, who was later made a bishop of this town in Armenia.

Formerly, Sebaste was called Ipayo, named after the river that flows through it. Ipayo was believed to be a municipality during the Spanish time in 1800. Pestilence and calamities wrought misfortunes upon the community that later, the heavy toll forced Sebaste to be annexed to Pandan. Thereafter, what once the seat of the municipality became“ Arabal Of Sebaste.

The image of St. Blaise was a gift of Dona Matilde, wife of the Duke of Seville, to his son, Father Mariano Zapata, then the parish priest of Pandan who transferred his residence in Sebaste. He took along with him the image of St. Blaise and installed as patron of Sebaste. He thought that the place was cursed, so the statue of St. Blaise was made the patron saint of Ipayo when his miracle was claimed were manifested not only in preventing calamities but also in healing the sick. The news of his miracles spread throughout Panay, Negros, Mindanao, and other places.
